Check of levels of liquids (according to the Schedule of routine maintenance)

Location of the probe of measurement of motive oil on l models 2.0 and 2.5; level of motive oil has to be constantly between two measured risks on an edge of the measuring probe (closer to top)

1 — the Probe of measurement of level of motive oil
2 — the Cover of a jellied mouth of motive oil
3 — Risk

4 — the Lower mark
5 — the Top mark

Location of the probe of measurement of motive oil on models of 3.0 l; level of motive oil has to be constantly between two measured risks on an edge of the measuring probe (closer to top)

1 — the Probe of measurement of level of motive oil
2 — the Cover of a jellied mouth of motive oil

3 — the Lower mark
4 — the Top mark

Below also some special procedures of service demanding performance of additional checks of levels of liquids are described. Regularly look under the car, checking it for existence of signs of development of leak of working liquids.

Various liquids play a role of working bodies in lubrication systems, coolings, braking, couplings, heating and air conditioning, washing of glasses, etc. In view of the fact that all liquids are subject to fluidifying and development eventually, and also during normal functioning of systems gradually become soiled, it is necessary to make their full replacement periodically. Before starting adjustment of level or replacement, study the list of the grades of working liquids recommended for use in the car.

When checking levels of liquids the car has to be parked on an equal horizontal platform, whenever possible with a hard coating.

Motive oil

Check of level of motive oil is made by means of the measuring probe passed throughout the directing tube and the pallet of its case lowered in the engine to the lower point. The probe settles down in the left forward corner of a motive compartment, near a jellied mouth of motive oil.

Check of level of oil has to be made before the first in the present day trip, or about 15 minutes later after an engine stop. If to execute check immediately after switching off of the engine, its results will adequately not reflect a situation as the part of oil will be distributed on internal galleries and components of the engine.

Take the measuring probe from the directing tube and dry wipe its edge pure rags or a paper towel. Insert the probe back into a tube against the stop, then again take. Having examined a probe edge, estimate the size of the site moistened with oil. Level of oil has to be between top (F) and lower (L) marks in a probe edge. In case of need add in the engine the corresponding amount of oil of the demanded grade (not higher than mark F at the cold engine).

A little above F tag on an edge of the probe is available risk, corresponding to the maximum admissible level of oil at the hot engine.

Rise in level from the lower (L) mark in the probe to top (F) requires about one liter of oil. Lowering of level out of limits of the lower bound of admissible range conducts to development of oil starvation of the engine fraught with serious mechanical damages of the last. Try not to pour also oil above the top mark as it can lead to a pelting of spark plugs or failure of epiploons of the power unit as a result of excessive increase of pressure.

At a dolivaniye of motive oil difference of his producer from the producer of the filled-in oil does not matter; however use oil with classification by API and number of viscosity of SAE designated by the Subaru company.

To fill in oil in the engine it is necessary to uncover equipped with a carving of a jellied mouth. In order to avoid spraying of oil during its gas station in the engine use a funnel, or a butterdish with a long nose. Having filled in oil, screw and strongly tighten a cover of a jellied mouth, then start the engine and attentively examine a drain stopper and the surface of an oil filter interfaced to the block on existence of signs of leaks. Kill the engine, wait about 15 minutes during which oil will merge in the pallet, then double-check its level.

Check of level of engine oil is important preventive procedure of service of the engine. Continuous decrease in level testifies to existence of leak of oil as a result of failure of epiploons, damage of sealing laying, wear of piston rings or the directing plugs of valves. If oil on color or a consistence reminds milk, or at it there are water drops, it speaks about possible damage of laying of a head of cylinders, or formation of cracks to a head body (ok) or the block. Check has to be made immediately. During measurement of level of oil always check also its state. Big and index fingers remove oil traces from a probe edge, - in case of presence at it of small metal particles oil is subject to replacement (see the Section Replacement of Motive Oil and Oil Filter).

Liquid for washing of a windshield

Liquid for washing of a windshield is filled in in the special tank made of plastic located in the left back corner of a motive compartment of the car. The Station wagon models Legacy and Outback are equipped also with a washer of back glass liquid to which nozzle moves from the general tank. In regions with a temperate climate as liquid for washing of glass clear water can be used, however it is not necessary to fill the tank more than on 2/3 for the purpose of compensation of expansion of water at its freezing during frosts. At operation of the car in severe climatic conditions it is necessary to fill in only patent screen wipers providing the corresponding decrease in a freezing point of liquid in the tank. In order to avoid frosting of glass when washing in cold weather previously warm up it by an obduv the air passed via the heater heat exchanger.

Rules of configuration of mix are usually printed on a container label. Do not apply to addition in liquid of washing of glasses the antifreeze used in the cooling system at all, - the last is aggressive in relation to a paint and varnish covering of body panels!

GUR liquid

Check of level of the GUR hydraulic liquid has to be made at a temperature of walls of the tank about 20 °C.

In the rack transfer equipped with the hydraulic booster working liquid which starts needing replacement eventually is used.

On the majority of models the tank of GUR liquid is fixed directly on the case of the steering pump in forward part of the power unit and equipped with a removable cover.

And — the GUR Tank
In — the Top mark (MOVE)
With — the Lower mark (MIN)

For check of level of hydraulic liquid it is necessary to park the car on an equal horizontal surface, to establish forward wheels of the car in rectilinear situation and to kill the engine.

Visually determine the level of the liquid which is in it by the tags applied on translucent walls of the tank. Try not to allow decrease in level of GUR liquid out of limits of the lower bound of admissible range (a tag of "MIN"), - in case of need make the corresponding adjustment, having brought liquid to level marks "MOVE" are slightly lower.

In order to avoid hit of dirt in hydraulic system at a dolivaniye of the GUR working liquid wipe a cover and a surface of the tank pure rags.

If necessary liquid is added directly in the tank through a mouth of the last by means of a funnel. Use only hydraulic liquid of the recommended grade.

If the level of hydraulic liquid is on a mark of "MAX" or above, pump out surplus, having used a suitable syringe or a rubber pear.

If need for adjustment of level of liquid arises regularly and often, check the steering pump, a case of rack transfer, and also all connecting lines of a hydraulic path of system of GUR and their nipple sockets for existence of signs of leaks. In case of identification of leak of working liquid, eliminate their reason, having tightened the corresponding bolts or nuts and/or having replaced defective components. Having finished adjustment, collect traces of the spilled liquid pure rags or a paper towel.

Check of level of the RKPP transmission oil

See the Section Replacement of the RKPP Transmission Oil.

Check of the ATF level

See the Section Replacement of ATF of automatic transmission.

Check of level of lubricant liquid of forward differential (model with AT)

Park the car on an equal horizontal surface.

Take the measuring probe and dry wipe its edge.

Zaparvte the probe on the regular place, having tracked correctness of its landing.

Again take the probe and consider oil level on a measuring scale on its edge, - in case of need make the corresponding adjustment, having brought greasing level to a tag of F (FULL).
